I have lived in Bethnal Green for seven years. When I moved here it felt like coming home. I always have this feeling that everyone is from somewhere else in the East End. It doesn't matter if you have just arrived or if you have been here for 90 years or more, liek some of my neighbours.
I live on an estate that is built on the grounds of the old asylum, Warburton's Red House, It was a private asylum in the 1700s. Some of us on the estate think that elements of madness have seeped into the area, attracting people with mental health problems, but I think it's more about living in social housing, crowded closely in a narrow area, on top of each other.
It's amazing that it isn't more problematic. Maybe people are more tolerant in cities, they know there is more to risk if you make too much of a fuss, if people overstep the mark.
